You Can Prevent Gum Disease

It is estimated that some 47%–nearly half–of US adults over 30 have periodontitis, a serious form of gum disease. In populations over 65, that number grows to 70%. So a majority of American adults have gum disease. You may not think it is very serious if so many have it, but it can lead to serious consequences. Fortunately, it is easily preventable.

Gum disease is caused by bacteria in the mouth that infect the gums. These are the same bacteria that cause tooth decay. The infection starts off fairly innocuously, causing mild inflammation and occasional easy bleeding. Pain is not an early symptom. Due to the mildness of symptoms, many people don’t think there is a problem.

Left untreated, however, this infection can spread through the gums to deeper tissues and even bone, past the point of reversibility. Gums pull away from teeth, forming pockets where bacteria can gather. Connective tissues deteriorate, causing teeth to loosen and even fall out. Gum disease can wreak havoc in your mouth.

But since it is caused by bacteria in plaque, by removing plaque you are eliminating the threat. This is another reason to maintain a great oral home care regimen, and come in for regular cleanings with Dr. Desiree T. Palmer, DMD . Brush your teeth twice daily and floss at least once a day.
